Louisiana shines in national price verification survey report
For immediate release: July 16, 2024
Baton Rouge, La. – The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) Division of Weights and Measures recorded the highest (best) compliance rate in a recent national survey for price accuracy.
The 2024 National Price Verification Survey, conducted by the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) between January 1 and February 29, contains the results of 7,462 inspections across 26 states, verifying the price accuracy of 419,237 individual items in 11 retail categories.
While broad conclusions from the survey cite a need for improvement in overall price accuracy across the nation, Louisiana’s program was highlighted for its successful approach, which balances between incentivizing compliance and imposing consequences for negligence or intentional misconduct.
To that end, LDAF’s Division of Weights and Measures annually inspects all businesses that use scanning devices to determine the final sale price in retail sales. Approximately 40 field inspectors perform annual price verification inspections at approximately 7,000 retail locations in Louisiana.
“Our Weights and Measures staff help retailers gain compliance with pricing laws through a combination of education, inspection, and enforcement actions, and responsiveness to business and consumer concerns throughout the state,” said LDAF Commissioner Mike Strain, DVM. “We’re very proud of their daily commitment to protecting buyers and sellers, and this survey confirms that we’re getting it right.”
